Reenchanting the Villa Médicis: Architecture, Design, and Crafts

organized by: Académie de France à Rome - Villa Médicis

Friday 23th may : 14:00 - 15:00

Description

Since 2022, the Académie de France à Rome - Villa Médicis, directed by Sam Stourdzé, has been undertaking the ‘Reenchanting the Villa Médicis’ project, which aims to showcase the excellence of French and Italian design and craftsmanship by restructuring its interior spaces and gardens. Architectural masterpiece of the renaissance, the Villa Medici has undergone a number of major interventions that are now emblematic of the place, notably by Ferdinand de Medici, Horace Vernet, Balthus and Richard Peduzzi among others. Over the past two years, with the commitment of major partners, the Académie de France in Rome has successively refurbished its reception rooms and historic suites.

It is now preparing to inaugurate its refurbished guest rooms and two new gardens dedicated to citrus fruits, while at the same time setting up a residency programme aimed specifically at professionals in the arts and crafts. Through this initiative, the Académie de France in Rome aims to encourage dialogue between the arts and crafts and artists, designers and architects, in a spirit of creativity and innovation, as well as a dialogue between contemporary and heritage. The Villa Medici is a showcase of these fruitful synergies.
