Who can argue? Whether it's Seto ceramics, rice-straw wall panels, objects made of urushi or Japanese cypress, or wabisabi explorations everywhere: Japan is ever-present in the vast niche that is French fine arts and crafts. Why does Japanese savoir-faire continue to hold such fascination for French artisans, artists, designers and other key players? Technical mastery, finesse of gesture, aesthetics of the “few” and a certain perception of time: Japan inspires, questions, transforms, and sometimes sets the (right) tone in terms of “beautifully made".
At a time when French fine arts and crafts are redefining themselves, the Japanese à la française model is as much admired as it is questioned.
In other words: why Japan?
The discussion, curated and moderated by Rabi Taabara Yansané, founder of Rabi Taabara and director of Beau et Métiers d'art projects between France and Japan, will be joined by
Guillaume Garnier, creator and co-founder of Garnier & Linker, Karine Arabian and Franck Blais, artists and co-founders of JN. Mellor Club (Nuit Blanche Kyoto 2024 winners, Villa Kujoyama 2023 winners), Kevin Berthon, director of HIS Paris, and Ako Nagasue, journalist in art, design and fashion.
